Political developments in Sudan and Prospects for Peace and Stability

We hope that the recent political developments that took place in Sudan will be the beginning of the end to end the crisis that the country witnessed during the last period, in the wake of the armed forces’ memorandum that was submitted to the President of the Council of the Head of State and the Prime Minister, in which it called for expanding the base of participation in governance and supporting the armed forces that are waging an unequal war in The south, in light of the lack of equipment it suffers from in the face of the rebel army, which is supported by many external powers.

Among these developments, Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi announced the formation of a national unity government with the participation of all parties and trade unions and professional federations in the country, with the exception of the National Islamic Front, which abstained from joining this government due to its opposition to making concessions to the rebels in the south, who in turn oppose the application of Islamic Sharia laws in the country.

The second of these developments was the news that Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi accepted the peace initiative that was signed last November between the leader of the rebellion in the south and the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party to end the war that created many economic, security and living pressures for Sudan.

It must be emphasized here that achieving peace in the country is a sufficient success for any government in Sudan, as the solution to other problems that Sudan suffers from begins, according to our belief, with stopping this destructive war that foreign powers wanted to sabotage Sudan and undermine its identity, belief and democratic experience.

There is no doubt that everyone's commitment to the interim program signed by the parties and trade unions is a guarantee of the success of the new government, as this program gives priority to ending the war in the south and achieving peace in accordance with the agreement signed with the rebels.
