King Hussein expresses his position on the Shamir plan: Avoidance and divergence of positions

An appeal for peace and respect for Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338
President George H.W. Bush and King Hussein of Jordan, on the White House balcony after concluding their meeting

King Hussein's meeting with US President Bush is a clear indication of the divergence of positions. He was strong in his lack of enthusiasm for the American proposals in this regard, as the king avoided supporting the Shamir plan, stressing the positions of the Palestine Liberation Organization regarding this plan.

Confirmations come that there will be no peace without Israel accepting the principle of land swaps for peace, basing any solution to the Palestinian issue on the principles contained in Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338, holding negotiations in an international peace conference, and the King's refusal to negotiate the future of the West Bank and Gaza instead of the PLO. The Palestinians are the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian Arab people. Jordan rejected the "minimum option" proposed by Shamir, and Jordan's opposition to Shamir's plan is at the forefront of that.

These positions come to give a strong impetus that King Hussein of Jordan has communicated the organization's positions to the American administration, and called on it to the necessity of continuity and continuation of the Palestinian-American dialogue to revive the peace process in the Middle East.

We hope that these positions will put new pressure on the positions of the United States and Israel to convene the international peace conference on the Middle East issue, and that the United States will clearly understand the position of the Palestine Liberation Organization and what it wants regarding the peace process.
