The Iraqi-Iranian Negotiations in Geneva: A Path to Peace and Cooperation

The Iran-Iraq peace negotiations, Geneva 1989
Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz

We hope that the new round of Iraqi-Iranian negotiations that began in Geneva yesterday between the foreign ministers of the two countries will be crowned with success and bring their views closer on how to implement the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution No. 598, which received the full support of all five permanent members of the Security Council and the international community.

The resumption of the current negotiations comes amid new circumstances that the two countries are going through, which are almost similar, and indicate that they are seeking a better future away from war and the destruction and devastation it caused them in various military, economic and civilian facilities.

The two countries are currently working to rebuild what was left of the war and improve their economic and living conditions. Iraq is rebuilding Al-Faw and rebuilding cities, while Iran is repairing its oil facilities that were damaged by the war in preparation for operating the oil refineries that were damaged as a result of the war.

All of these things indicate that the two countries do not intend to return to fighting again, and this, in fact, calls for optimism, no matter how difficult and long these negotiations are, to end the conflict and make the peace process a success, which in fact requires a common understanding by the two parties.

Although the fat people took different positions in interpreting the provisions of the Security Council resolution and the ways to implement them during the previous rounds of negotiations, some progress was achieved during them, and these rounds contributed to creating some atmosphere of confidence between the two countries and led to the exchange of prisoners and patients between the two countries under the supervision of the International Red Cross .

The success of these negotiations and the achievement of security and stability in the region will create positive conditions between their countries and open the atmosphere for building sound relations based on mutual respect between the Arab countries in the Gulf and Iran, which will make them more powerful to confront the common enemy of the Islamic nation, which is Israel and its supporters.

We hope that the two countries respond to the aspirations and aspirations of their peoples and the entire Islamic nation in ending this conflict between two neighboring Islamic countries, in order to direct their efforts and energies towards the great challenges facing us all.
