Optimism Surrounds the 18th OIC Ministerial Conference

Optimism on the eve of the eighteenth ministerial conference of foreign ministers
Dr. Hamed Al-Ghabban, Secretary General of Islamic Cooperation

The statements made yesterday by Dr. Hamid Al-Ghabed, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, spread a sense of optimism on the eve of the 18th Ministerial Conference of Foreign Ministers of the 45 member states of the Organization in Riyadh.

The hearts of the Arabs and Muslims, in particular, were pleased with what Dr. Al-Ghabed said about reducing conflicts between member states and finding appropriate solutions for them, as well as providing meetings with regard to the political issues on the agenda of the conference.

This point in particular represents the essence of the hopes of the Arab and Islamic masses, and what they expect from the Organization of the Islamic Conference and other international organizations and groupings - that these groupings play a major and more active role in settling political differences and regional disputes between their members.

When these organizations and groupings began to emerge, all of our hopes were that they would be an arena that belonged to us and to it, in which our differences would be resolved, and in which our points of view and positions would be brought closer together.

Today, we see that the opportunity is ripe for the Organization of the Islamic Conference to play a greater role in order to reach this goal..which is to mobilize the powers of the Islamic and Arab worlds to confront the real dangers besetting us, which almost threaten our very existence.

While confirming our optimism, we hope that the efforts of the foreign ministers of Islamic countries will be crowned with success as they begin today to discuss 60 items on their agenda, covering all the “real” areas of the aspired Islamic and Arab action, away from secondary issues that do nothing but spread discord and division in the ranks – what We now need unity of class and purpose.
