The important decisions announced by the foreign ministers of Islamic countries at the conclusion of their eighteenth session in Riyadh constitute what could be an integrated "Islamic initiative" for settling the conflict in the Middle East region.
The final statement affirmed the recognition of the forty-six Organization of the Islamic Conference states of the independent state of Palestine, which gives the nascent state wide international weight and support in its endeavor to occupy its place and play its role in the midst of the current settlement talks.. and confirms that it is a party that cannot be excluded from any peace talk.
Then comes what the ministers decided to call on the United Nations to supervise the occupied Palestinian territories, in preparation for completing Israel's final withdrawal from it.. so that the international community participates in safeguarding the rights of the Palestinian people.
The Islamic ministers were also keen to confirm that the path of the international conference, in the presence of the permanent members of the Security Council and all concerned parties, including the Palestine Liberation Organization, is the guarantor of reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict.
While we welcome this Islamic initiative, we hope that this Islamic position will be towards formulating a unified Arab position, with which we will enter into talks of settlement and the numerous peace projects on offer.
