British Foreign and Interior Ministers confirm the increasing interest in the crucial Arab issues

In office 11 June 1983 – 24 July 1989
Geoffrey Howe, British Foreign Secretary

The statements made by Geoffrey Howe, the British Foreign Secretary in Bahrain last night, reflected a remarkable and growing British interest in the role that Britain can play in the crucial Arab issues, especially those related to the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Lebanese issue, and the issue of stabilizing the cease-fire in the Gulf region in light of the atmosphere of détente that characterizes international relations at the present time.

Just yesterday, Jeffrey Howe announced in a press conference held in Bahrain that the current situation in the occupied Arab territories cannot continue, while British Home Secretary Douglas Hurd confirmed in a press conference held in Kuwait that the Palestinian popular uprising in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip managed to change the perception of world public opinion regarding the Palestinian issue and called for the necessity of the participation of Palestinians from inside and outside Palestine in the peace talks between the concerned parties in the region.

There is no doubt that these statements issued by two British ministers at the same time constitute an impetus for the efforts aimed at establishing the peace process in the Middle East region, although we expect Britain to play a greater role in this process by exercising forms of effective pressure on the Israeli leadership to accept the convening of the international peace conference under the auspices of the United Nations and in the presence of the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Britain aims, through the frantic visits of its senior officials to the region at this particular time in particular, to reaffirm the British role as a key factor in the peace process in the Middle East.

However, we have the right to ask, where is Britain from the peace opportunities presented by the Palestine Liberation Organization recently, and where is it from the declaration of a Palestinian state.. Isn't it high time for it to emerge from under the American umbrella? Undertaking special initiatives that can contribute effectively to restoring the usurped rights of the Palestinian people. It also contributed to a fundamental role in establishing the "state" of the Zionist entity.
