King Fahd's Tour in Iraq and Egypt Inspires Optimism in Unifying the Arab Position

King Fahd bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud

The current tour by King Fahd bin Abdulaziz of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during which he has so far visited both Iraq and Egypt, gives rise to optimism about the possibility of reaching a unified and consistent Arab position regarding the efforts exerted to establish a peaceful settlement in the Middle East.

This tour gains its importance from the timing in which it took place, prior to the visit of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to the American capital, Washington, and after him, King Hussein of Jordan. The proposed settlement projects also give this desired Arab position great weight, with Saudi support for it.

Reports from the Egyptian capital indicate that the Saudi and Egyptian leaders agreed to call for the convening of an international conference for peace in the Middle East, with the participation of all concerned parties, including the Palestine Liberation Organization, as the only acceptable way to a settlement.

The Saudi monarch's tour also acquires greater importance, as it also discussed ways to settle the Lebanese crisis and the Iraqi-Iranian peace negotiations. It is the cause of the Palestinian people.

Hence, no Arab observer can but praise the efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to purify the Arab airspace. These efforts indicate its commitment to its national responsibility.

We hope that the rest of the other Arab parties will be at the same level of sense of Arab national responsibility. There is no longer much time for us to lose as an Arab nation.
